Childhood Immunizations

For many infections, vaccines not only protect the individual but also reduce the chance of spreading the disease to others. Understanding where childhood vaccination rates are lower can help anticipate areas at higher risk for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

However, measuring local immunization rates isn’t always simple—different methods of tracking each have their own limitations. By combining, or triangulating, multiple data sources, we can build a more accurate and comprehensive picture of vaccination coverage across communities.

How to use this data

These plots show estimates of childhood immunization rates, broken down by state, age, urban vs. rural residence, and insurance status. You can choose which vaccine and age group to view. The data come from two sources: the CDC’s National Immunization Survey (NIS) and Epic Cosmos. NIS is based on household survey responses and provides state-level estimates. Epic Cosmos reflects data from children who have had recent primary care visits at facilities using Epic’s electronic health record system.

Each dataset has its limitations. NIS may miss individuals who don’t respond to surveys, while Epic Cosmos only includes those regularly accessing care at specific health systems. Because of this, both sources may overestimate vaccine coverage compared to the broader population. Triangulating between them helps provide a clearer picture.
